Saudi Arabia, occupying the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula, is the birthplace of Islam and the custodian of its two holiest cities, Mecca and Medina, which together welcome millions of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims every year. The kingdom was founded in its modern form in 1932 by Abdulaziz Ibn Saud and is governed under a system that takes Islamic law as its constitution. The population of around 36 million is overwhelmingly Sunni and follows the Hanbali school in jurisprudence, with prayer times nationwide issued by the Umm al-Qura University in Mecca using a 18.5° Fajr angle and a Maghrib-plus-90-minutes Isha (shortened during Ramadan). The whole country observes Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3) with no daylight saving. Beyond Mecca and Medina, major prayer-times destinations include the capital Riyadh on the central Najd plateau, the Red Sea port of Jeddah, and the Eastern Province metropolises of Dammam and Al Khobar.
