ABOUT

About Egypt.

Egypt, with a population of around 110 million, has been a centre of Islamic civilisation since the Arab conquest of 641 CE and remains the demographic heart of the Sunni Arab world. Cairo's al-Azhar Mosque and University, founded between 970 and 972 CE under the Fatimid caliphate, is the oldest continuously operating institution of Sunni Islamic learning and shapes religious opinion across the broader Muslim world. The country is overwhelmingly Sunni with a Coptic Christian minority of around 10%, and most Egyptian Muslims follow the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence, though Hanafi and Maliki traditions are also present. Prayer times nationwide are issued by the Egyptian General Authority of Survey using a 19.5° Fajr angle and a 17.5° Isha angle. Egypt observes Eastern European Time (UTC+2, shifting to UTC+3 during summer daylight saving). Major prayer-times destinations include Cairo, Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, the Suez Canal cities, and the historic Nile valley towns of Luxor and Aswan.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Egypt.

Egypt is predominantly Hanafi (with significant Shafi'i) (Sunni), and the Egyptian General Authority of Survey calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the Hanafi convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its length, slightly later than in other schools. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
