Understanding the Significance of Prayer Times

Fajr Prayer Time (Pre-Dawn): It symbolizes a fresh start to the day and invites believers to reflect and seek guidance from ALLAH.

Dhuhr Prayer Time (Midday): It allows Muslims to break from daily activities and connect with ALLAH.

Asr Prayer Time (Afternoon): It serves as a gentle reminder to reconnect before the day ends.

Maghrib Prayer Time (Sunset): Performed just after sunset, the Maghrib prayer marks the day's closing.

Isha Prayer Time (Night): The isha prayer time brings the day to a close, encouraging quiet reflection before rest.

How are prayer times calculated?

Islamic prayer times are determined by the position of the sun relative to your exact location on Earth. Each of the five daily prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha — corresponds to a specific solar position, so times shift gradually throughout the year as the sun's path changes.

  • Fajr begins at astronomical twilight, when the sun is 15° to 18° below the horizon (depending on the calculation method). Fajr must be completed before sunrise.
  • Dhuhr begins when the sun passes its zenith — solar noon for your location.
  • Asr is determined by shadow length. Under the standard (Shafi'i / Maliki / Hanbali) convention, Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its height. Under the Hanafi convention, Asr begins when the shadow is twice the object's height — slightly later.
  • Maghrib begins immediately after sunset.
  • Isha begins when the sky has darkened fully, typically when the sun is 15° to 18° below the horizon.

Our system supports more than 10 calculation methods including Muslim World League (MWL), ISNA, Egyptian General Authority, Umm Al-Qura (Makkah), the University of Islamic Sciences Karachi, Diyanet (Turkey), and several regional standards. We auto-select an appropriate default for each country, but you can change it on any city page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find prayer times for my city?

Use the search bar at the top of our homepage or browse by country on our World Prayer Times directory. We cover over 10,000 cities across 200+ countries.

Are the prayer times updated daily?

Yes. Our prayer times are recalculated every day based on accurate astronomical data for your specific location. Times shift gradually throughout the year as the sun's position changes.

Which calculation method does your site use?

We support multiple methods. You can select your preferred method (MWL, ISNA, Egypt, Umm Al-Qura, Karachi, Diyanet, and more) and juristic setting (Hanafi or Shafi'i / Maliki / Hanbali) on any city page. We auto-select an appropriate default for each country.

What is the difference between Hanafi and Shafi'i Asr time?

In the Hanafi school, Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its height. In the Shafi'i (and Maliki/Hanbali) school, Asr begins when the shadow equals the object's height — making the Hanafi Asr time slightly later in the day.
