Türkiye, straddling Europe and Asia with a population of around 85 million, is one of the largest Muslim-majority countries in the world and the heir to the Ottoman caliphate, which ruled much of the wider Sunni Muslim world from 1517 until its abolition in 1924. Modern Türkiye is constitutionally secular, but Islam is the religion of around 99% of its citizens and shapes daily life through the Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı (Presidency of Religious Affairs), which administers mosques and publishes official prayer times nationwide. Turkish Muslims overwhelmingly follow the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, with a significant Alevi minority (around 15–20%) of distinct Shia-related tradition. The country contains some of the most architecturally influential mosques in Islam — Istanbul's Süleymaniye and Sultan Ahmed, Edirne's Selimiye, and the recently reconverted Hagia Sophia. Türkiye observes Turkey Time (UTC+3) year-round and has not used daylight saving since 2016.
