Malaysia, with a population of around 34 million, is constitutionally a Muslim country with Islam as the religion of the federation; around 64% of the national population practises Sunni Islam, with the remainder primarily Buddhist (Chinese ethnic), Hindu (Indian ethnic), and Christian. Malaysian Muslims overwhelmingly follow the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence, a heritage shaped by centuries of trade with the wider Indian Ocean Muslim world. Islam is administered at the state level under the authority of each Malaysian sultan, with national coordination through JAKIM (the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia), which publishes official prayer times nationwide. The Masjid Negara (National Mosque) in Kuala Lumpur, opened in 1965, features a striking 16-pointed star roof representing the federation's thirteen states and the five pillars of Islam.
