Thailand, with a population of around 70 million, has a Muslim minority of around 5%, concentrated in the southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Songkhla — a region with deep historic, linguistic, and religious ties to the Malay world. Thai Muslims are predominantly ethnic Malays and follow the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence, with a smaller community of ethnic Cham Muslims and the country's central plains hosting a much smaller community of Persian and Indian descent. The Krue Se Mosque in Pattani, partly ruined and dating from the sixteenth century, is one of the oldest mosques in Southeast Asia. National coordination for Muslim affairs runs through the Office of the Chularajamontri (the Sheikhul Islam of Thailand). Prayer times are typically calculated using the Muslim World League method. Thailand observes Indochina Time (UTC+7) without daylight saving, and at 5–20° north has relatively stable prayer schedules across the year.
