ABOUT

About Singapore.

Singapore, the city-state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula with a population of around 6 million, has a Muslim minority of around 15% — predominantly ethnic Malays, with smaller Indian Muslim, Pakistani, Arab, and Eurasian Muslim communities. Islam arrived in Singapore through the Malay world's centuries-long maritime Muslim networks, and most Singaporean Muslims follow the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence. The country's religious affairs are administered by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), which oversees mosques, halal certification, and the official prayer-times calendar. The Sultan Mosque on Muscat Street in Kampong Glam, completed in its current form in 1932 with a distinctive golden dome rising 25 metres above the pre-war townhouses, is the country's most prominent Friday mosque. Prayer times are published by MUIS using parameters close to the Muslim World League standard. Singapore observes Singapore Standard Time (UTC+8), and at just over 1° north has remarkably stable prayer schedules year-round.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Singapore.

Singapore is predominantly Shafi'i (Sunni), and the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the standard convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its length. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
