ABOUT

About Iraq.

Iraq, with a population of around 44 million, sits at the historic heart of Mesopotamia and was the seat of the Abbasid caliphate from 762 to 1258 CE — the period of the Islamic Golden Age that gave the world the Bayt al-Hikmah in Baghdad and centuries of Arabic-language scholarship. The country today has one of the most religiously layered populations in the Muslim world, with a Shia majority concentrated in the south (around 60–65% of the population) and a Sunni Arab and Sunni Kurdish minority across the centre and north. The holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, with the shrines of Imam Ali and Imam Husayn, are among the most important pilgrimage sites in Twelver Shia Islam. Iraqi Sunnis predominantly follow the Hanafi school, and prayer times are commonly calculated using the Egyptian General Authority or Muslim World League method. Iraq observes Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3) without daylight saving.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Iraq.

Iraq is predominantly Hanafi (Sunni), and the Muslim World League (MWL) calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the Hanafi convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its length, slightly later than in other schools. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
