ABOUT

About Sudan.

Sudan, with a population of around 47 million, is the third-largest country in Africa by area and is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim (around 97%) following the Maliki school of jurisprudence — though Hanafi influence persists from the Ottoman and Turco-Egyptian periods. The country has a particularly strong Sufi tradition, with the Qadiriyya, Tijaniyya, and Sammaniyya orders shaping religious practice across much of the population; the Hamed al-Nil Mosque in Omdurman is famous for its Friday afternoon Sufi dervish gatherings. The Mahdist movement of the 1880s — led by Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi — briefly established an Islamic state in Sudan and remains a defining episode in the country's religious memory. Prayer times are typically calculated using the Egyptian General Authority or Umm al-Qura method. Sudan observes Central Africa Time (UTC+2) without daylight saving, and its low to moderate latitude gives most cities relatively stable Fajr and Isha times.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Sudan.

Sudan is predominantly Maliki (Sunni), and the Egyptian General Authority of Survey calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the standard convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its length. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
