Chad, a large landlocked country at the geographic centre of Africa with a population of around 18 million, is roughly 55% Muslim — concentrated in the northern and central regions — with the remainder Christian and traditional African religions, mostly in the south. Chadian Muslims are predominantly Sunni and follow the Maliki school of jurisprudence, shaped by centuries of trans-Saharan trade and by the influence of the Tijaniyya and Sanussiyya Sufi orders. The medieval Kanem-Bornu Empire, centred on Lake Chad from the ninth to the nineteenth century, was one of the most enduring Muslim states of Sub-Saharan Africa and helped spread Islam across the Sahel. The Faisal Mosque in N'Djamena, named for the late Saudi king who funded its construction, is the country's principal Friday mosque.
