ABOUT

About Niger.

Niger, a large, landlocked country in the western Sahel with a population of around 27 million, is roughly 99% Muslim β€” among the most religiously homogeneous countries in West Africa. The vast majority of Nigerien Muslims are Sunni and follow the Maliki school of jurisprudence, shaped by centuries of Saharan trade with North Africa and by the influence of the Sufi Qadiriyya and Tijaniyya orders that spread south from Morocco and Algeria. The medieval city of Agadez was a major hub of trans-Saharan caravan trade and Islamic scholarship, and its sixteenth-century Grand Mosque with a 27-metre minaret remains the country's most architecturally distinctive religious landmark. Prayer times are commonly calculated using the Muslim World League method. Niger observes West Africa Time (UTC+1) without daylight saving, and its position spanning 12–24Β° north β€” from the Sahel into the deep Sahara β€” gives most cities relatively stable Fajr and Isha schedules across the year.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Niger.

Niger is predominantly Maliki (Sunni), and the Muslim World League (MWL) calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the standard convention is applied β€” Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its length. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
