Algeria, the largest country in Africa by area with a population of around 45 million, has been Muslim-majority since the seventh-century Arab conquest and is overwhelmingly Sunni, following the Maliki school of jurisprudence with strong influence from the Tijani and Qadiri Sufi orders. The Great Mosque of Algiers, completed in 2020 on the bay of Algiers with the world's tallest minaret at 265 metres, is the third-largest mosque in the world by area; the older Ketchaoua Mosque (1612) in the Casbah preserves the country's Ottoman-era religious architecture. Algeria has a particularly strong tradition of religious scholarship at the Emir Abdelkader University in Constantine and the Mosque of al-Mansurah in Tlemcen. Prayer times nationwide are typically calculated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs using parameters close to the Muslim World League standard. Algeria observes Central European Time (UTC+1) without daylight saving — the same clock as Paris in winter, one hour earlier in summer.
Algeria is predominantly Maliki (Sunni), and the Algerian Ministry of Religious Affairs calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the standard convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its length. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
