The Qibla from Algiers points toward the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. Makkah is approximately 3,923 km along the great-circle path. Orient your prayer space so it faces this bearing before performing Salah.
Algiers, the capital of Algeria, climbs steeply from a Mediterranean bay up to the surrounding hills and is home to about 3.5 million people in its metropolitan area. The Casbah, the old Ottoman-era medina at its core, contains the Ketchaoua Mosque (1612, later converted to a cathedral under French rule and restored as a mosque in 1962) and the Djamaa El Djedid (the "New Mosque" of 1660). On the eastern bay sits the recently completed Great Mosque of Algiers, the third-largest mosque in the world by area, with the world's tallest minaret at 265 metres, opened for prayer in 2020. Algeria follows the Maliki school of jurisprudence, with prayer times calculated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs using parameters similar to the Muslim World League standard. The city is on Central European Time (UTC+1) without daylight saving — the same clock as Paris in winter but an hour earlier in summer — and at 36° north sees a clear seasonal swing in daylight.
Prayer times shift gradually throughout the year as the sun's position changes. Read about the 10+ supported calculation methods and the astronomical math behind the schedule.
