Morocco, on the western edge of North Africa with a population of around 37 million, has been a centre of Sunni Islamic civilisation since the Idrisid dynasty established its first Muslim state in 789 CE. The country is overwhelmingly Sunni and follows the Maliki school of jurisprudence, mixed with a strong Sufi tradition that runs through the Qadiriyya, Shadhiliyya, and Tijaniyya orders, the last of which spread from Fez across West Africa. The al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University in Fez, founded in 859 CE by Fatima al-Fihri, is recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, completed in 1993 partly over the Atlantic, has the world's tallest religious minaret at 210 metres. Prayer times across Morocco are published by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs. Morocco observes UTC+1 year-round since 2018, reverting to UTC+0 only during Ramadan.
