ABOUT

About Libya.

Libya, stretching across nearly two thousand kilometres of the central North African coast with a population of around 7 million, has been Muslim-majority since the seventh-century Arab conquest and is overwhelmingly Sunni, following the Maliki school of jurisprudence. The country's religious geography is shaped by a strong Sufi tradition, particularly through the Sanussiyya order founded in the 1830s by the Algerian-born scholar Muhammad ibn Ali as-Sanussi, who established lodges across the Libyan desert that played a major role in resistance to Italian colonisation in the early twentieth century. The Gurgi Mosque (1833) and the Karamanli Mosque in Tripoli's old medina preserve the country's Ottoman-era religious architecture. Prayer times are commonly calculated using the Egyptian General Authority method. Libya observes Eastern European Time (UTC+2) without daylight saving, and its position straddling 21–33° north gives the south of the country much more stable prayer times than the Mediterranean coast.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Libya.

Libya is predominantly Maliki (Sunni), and the Egyptian General Authority of Survey calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the standard convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its length. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
