Bangladesh, with a population of around 170 million of whom roughly 91% identify as Muslim, is the fourth-most populous Muslim country in the world. The region was incorporated into the Bengal Sultanate from the fourteenth century onward and developed a distinctive South Asian Sunni Muslim culture shaped by long-standing Sufi tradition, particularly through the Chishti and Naqshbandi orders. Bengali Muslims predominantly follow the Hanafi school of jurisprudence. The national mosque, Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka, was designed in the 1960s to echo the cubic form of the Kaaba and can host around 40,000 worshippers; the seventeenth-century Star Mosque in Old Dhaka is celebrated for its blue-tiled mosaics. Prayer times nationwide are published by the Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh using a method close to the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi standard. Bangladesh observes Bangladesh Standard Time (UTC+6), and at 23–26° north it has the relatively stable Fajr and Isha schedule typical of tropical regions.
