ABOUT

About Lebanon.

Lebanon, with a population of around 5.5 million, is one of the most religiously diverse societies in the Middle East — home to substantial Sunni and Shia Muslim, Druze, Maronite Christian, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian communities, all formally recognised under the country's confessional political system. Roughly 60% of Lebanese citizens identify as Muslim, with Sunni and Shia communities of comparable size. Beirut's Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, completed in 2008 next to the Maronite Saint George Cathedral, has become a visual symbol of this religious coexistence. Lebanese Sunnis predominantly follow the Hanafi school, and prayer times are generally issued through Dar al-Fatwa (the Sunni religious authority) using a method aligned with the Muslim World League standard; Shia mosques may use slightly different parameters. Lebanon observes Eastern European Time (UTC+2, shifting to UTC+3 with daylight saving), and at 33° north sees moderate seasonal Fajr and Isha variation.

CALCULATION

Prayer calculation in Lebanon.

Lebanon is predominantly Hanafi (Sunni), and the Muslim World League (MWL) calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the Hanafi convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its length, slightly later than in other schools. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
