Senegal, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa with a population of around 18 million, is roughly 96% Muslim — one of the most Muslim countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, and one shaped to an unusual degree by powerful Sufi brotherhoods. The Mouride order founded in the late nineteenth century by Cheikh Amadou Bamba and the older Tijaniyya order brought from Morocco shape religious life across most of the country, organising not just spiritual practice but also economic networks centred on the holy city of Touba and the Tijani capital of Tivaouane. Senegalese Muslims follow the Maliki school of jurisprudence. The country's secular republican constitution coexists peacefully with this deep religious heritage. The Grande Mosquée de Dakar (1964) and the recently completed Massalikoul Djinane Mosque (2019) are the country's principal urban religious landmarks.
