Germany is home to around 5.5 million Muslims, roughly 6.6% of its 84-million population — the second-largest Muslim community in Western Europe after France. Most German Muslims are of Turkish heritage, the legacy of the Gastarbeiter labour-migration agreements that brought hundreds of thousands of Turkish workers to West Germany from the 1960s onward; significant Arab, Iranian, Bosnian, Albanian, and Afghan communities have joined them in subsequent decades. The principal religious institutions reflect this diversity: the DITIB (Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs), backed by the Turkish Diyanet, oversees one of the largest mosque networks in the country, alongside Sunni umbrella organisations such as the Islamic Council and the Central Council of Muslims in Germany. The Cologne Central Mosque, completed in 2018, is among the largest in Western Europe. Prayer times are typically calculated using the Muslim World League method. Germany observes Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 with daylight saving) and at 47–55° north sees substantial seasonal Fajr and Isha variation.
