Uzbekistan, with a population of around 36 million, is the most populous country in Central Asia and one of the historic heartlands of Islamic civilisation — the Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva were among the great centres of Hanafi scholarship from the ninth century onward, and Bukhara in particular produced Imam al-Bukhari (810–870 CE), the compiler of the Sahih al-Bukhari hadith collection. The country is around 90% Muslim, overwhelmingly Sunni and following the Hanafi school of jurisprudence with a long-standing Sufi tradition, particularly through the Naqshbandi order founded in fourteenth-century Bukhara. After seventy years of Soviet-era religious suppression, Uzbekistan has seen a steady revival of public religious practice since independence in 1991. Prayer times are commonly calculated using the Muslim World League or University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method. Uzbekistan observes Uzbekistan Time (UTC+5) without daylight saving, and at 37–46° north has substantial seasonal variation in Fajr and Isha.
Uzbekistan is predominantly Hanafi (Sunni), and the Muslim World League (MWL) calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the Hanafi convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its length, slightly later than in other schools. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
