Turkmenistan, a Central Asian country bordering the Caspian Sea with a population of around 7 million, is roughly 93% Muslim — predominantly Sunni and following the Hanafi school of jurisprudence in the broader Central Asian tradition. The country's religious heritage is deeply tied to the medieval city of Merv, once one of the largest cities in the world and a major centre of Hanafi scholarship under the Seljuks; its ruins outside modern Mary are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque in Gypjak, opened in 2004 near the birthplace of the country's first president, is the largest mosque in Central Asia by floor area, with capacity for 10,000 worshippers. Prayer times are commonly calculated using the Muslim World League method. Turkmenistan observes Turkmenistan Time (UTC+5) without daylight saving, and at 35–42° north sees noticeable seasonal variation in Fajr and Isha — though the country's largely flat, low-elevation geography keeps daylight more uniform than its mountainous neighbours.
Turkmenistan is predominantly Hanafi (Sunni), and the Muslim World League (MWL) calculation method is used by default across the country. For Asr, the Hanafi convention is applied — Asr begins when the shadow of an object is twice its length, slightly later than in other schools. Fajr begins at astronomical twilight when the sun is below the horizon, and Isha begins after the red twilight has fully disappeared from the sky.
