Canada is home to around 1.8 million Muslims, roughly 4.9% of its 40-million population — and one of the fastest-growing Muslim communities in North America. The community is exceptionally diverse, with significant South Asian (Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi), Arab (Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian, Moroccan), Iranian, Somali, Turkish, and Bosnian populations, concentrated in Greater Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. The Al-Rashid Mosque in Edmonton, built in 1938 by the small Lebanese community of the time, is the oldest mosque in Canada; today the Baitun Nur Mosque in Calgary and the Jaffari Community Centre in Thornhill are among the largest religious complexes in the country. Most Canadian mosques publish prayer times using either the ISNA (Fajr/Isha 15°/15°) or Muslim World League method. Canada spans six time zones from UTC-3:30 (Newfoundland) to UTC-8 (Pacific), and at 43–60° north most of the population sees substantial seasonal Fajr and Isha variation.
