Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan on the historic route between the Indian subcontinent and the Iranian plateau, is the country's second-largest city with a population of around 600,000 and the heartland of the Pashtun south. It served as the first capital of modern Afghanistan under Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1747 and remains the spiritual centre of the Pashtun Sunni-Hanafi tradition. The city's most venerated site is the Shrine of the Cloak of the Prophet Muhammad (Kirka Sharif), a small chamber containing a cloak said to have belonged to the Prophet and brought to Kandahar by Ahmad Shah Durrani in the eighteenth century; it sits at the centre of a complex that also houses Ahmad Shah's own mausoleum. The Jama Masjid of Kandahar and the Eidgah Mosque host the city's largest Friday and seasonal congregations. Afghanistan is overwhelmingly Sunni-Hanafi, with prayer times commonly calculated using the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method (Fajr/Isha 18°/18°). Kandahar is on Afghanistan Time (UTC+4:30) and at 31° north has moderate seasonal variation in Fajr and Isha times.
Prayer times shift gradually throughout the year as the sun's position changes. Read about the 10+ supported calculation methods and the astronomical math behind the schedule.
