1. Al-Qasim
Al-Qasim was the first son of the Prophet (S.A.W). Because of him, the Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) acquired the kunya Abu al-Qasim (father of Al-Qasim). He died in early childhood. His passing deeply affected the Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him), but he remained patient and submitted to ALLAH’s decree.
2. Sayyidah Zainab (May Allah be pleased with her)
Sayyidah Zainab (May Allah be pleased with her) was the eldest daughter. She was married to Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi’, who initially remained a non-Muslim during the early days of Islam.
Sayyidah Zainab (May Allah be pleased with her) supported Islam quietly, endured separation from her husband during migration, and remained loyal throughout. Eventually, Abu al-As accepted Islam and reunited with her. Their story is a powerful account of loyalty and patience.
3. Sayyidah Ruqayyah (May Allah be pleased with her)
Sayyidah Ruqayyah (May Allah be pleased with her) was married to Sayyidina Uthman ibn Affan (May Allah be pleased with him), the third caliph of Islam.
They migrated together to Abyssinia and later to Madinah. Ruqayyah passed away around the time of the Battle of Badr.
The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) entrusted her funeral rites to Sayyidina Uthman ibn Affan (May Allah be pleased with him), praising him for his devotion. Her marriage was so blessed that after her passing, Sayyidina Uthman ibn Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) married her sister, Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (May Allah be pleased with her).
4. Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (May Allah be pleased with her)
After Sayyidah Ruqayyah’s (May Allah be pleased with her) death, the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) gave Umm Kulthum’s hand in marriage to Uthman (May Allah be pleased with her), which earned him the title Dhul-Nurayn (the possessor of two lights).
She, too, passed away during the Prophet’s (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) lifetime. Their marriage was known for mutual respect and kindness.
5. Sayyidah Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her)
Sayyidah Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her) was the closest to the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) in both character and devotion.
Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) once said:
“Fatimah is a part of me. Whoever harms her, harms me.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3767)
She married Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Talib (May Allah be pleased with him) and gave birth to Sayyidina Hasan, Sayyidina Husayn, Sayyidah Zainab, and Sayyidah Umm Kulthum.
Sayyidah Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her) passed away just six months after the Prophet’s (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) death.
Her progeny continued the noble line of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him), especially through Sayyidina Hasan and Sayyidina Husayn, both beloved grandsons mentioned in numerous ahadith.
6. Abdullah
Also referred to as Tayyib or Tahir, Abdullah died in infancy, like his brother Al-Qasim. His short life still holds importance. After his death, a man mocked the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him), calling him abtar (cut off), meaning without male heirs.
In response, Allah revealed Surah Al-Kawthar:
“Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.”
(Qur’an 108:1–3)
This surah was both a consolation and a promise: that the Prophet’s (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) legacy would never be cut off.
7. Ibrahim
Ibrahim was born in Madinah to Sayyidah Maria al-Qibtiyya (May Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) was overjoyed at his birth, but was tested when Ibrahim passed away at 16 or 18 months.
On the day of his death, the sun was eclipsed, and people said it occurred due to his passing. But the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) corrected them:
“The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse pray and invoke Allah.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1043)
This showed his commitment to guiding people away from superstition and back to pure Tawheed.
Wisdom Behind Their Passing
The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) outlived all his children except Sayyidah Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her), who died shortly after him. Each death was a severe test, yet he remained firm and submitted to ALLAH’s will.
These losses shaped his message, not with bitterness, but with deeper compassion for others who grieve.
It is a sign of ALLAH’s wisdom that none of his sons survived to adulthood. Had they lived, people might have attributed prophethood to his lineage, risking distortions in belief.
Islam, as revealed, was preserved from such errors.
Legacy Through Daughters
Although Prophet’s (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) sons did not survive, his legacy continued through his daughters, especially Sayyidah Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her).
Her descendants, known as Ahl al-Bayt, remain honored in Islamic tradition. Their moral integrity and closeness to the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) continue to inspire Muslims worldwide.
